Planning a family trip to southern Germany? The Wank Mountain playground in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a local parent’s favorite. It offers breathtaking views of the mountains and some great amenities.
Located on the summit of Wank Mountain in the Bavarian Alps, this wooden playground offers families more than just incredible views. It is easily accessible by a ride on the Wankbahn cable car, which is a whole experience onto itself.
Parents love that you can make a day out of it and take the hike down back to Garmisch, but the show stopper is definitely the views at the top.
The mountain top where the playground sits, is quieter and cooler than the valley. Downtown Garminsh is a hot spot in the summer, because the village has a lot of festivals and cultural events. The top of Wank, is your alternative to take a break of the touristic area.
There’s a short walking loop (about 20–30 minutes) with child-friendly terrain. On clear days, you can even spot Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany.
Cable Car Access: Kids love the cool ride up and you can fit a stroller in the cable car.
Natural-Themed Playground: You will find a large wooden climbing towers, rope elements, and balance beams built into the alpine landscape. The ground is made of mulch so not ADA, there are also a few steps and uneven terrain.
Ideal for a break: The top of the mountain has a restaurant with a terrace which offers warm meals, coffee, and snacks with a direct view of the playground. But we do recommend to stay near the playground since there are heavy drops and it take a flight of stairs to get to the cafe.
What to do: Besides the playground, the mountain offers a good amount of trails great for all different ages, so local parents recommend to include a hike down from the top.
Budget: Although the playground is free to use, you will need to pay for the cable car ride up. One way tickets start at: 23 euros for adults to reach the top.
When to visit: We recommend visiting the playground in the warmer season. The trails and playground can’t be used in the winter, but the wank mountain turns into a
Morning: Park and ride the Wankbahn to the top and let the kids explore the playground. Get a snack at the Sonnenalm restaurant and start your hike down (about 2 hours downhill).
Lunch: Eat at Schützenhaus Cafe on your way back to town. The views and their Schnitzel are a must!
Afternoon: Visit the Garmisch-Partenkirchen pedestrian zone, families recommend to stop for ice cream there and enjoy souvenir shopping.
