Loire Valley With Kids: Champagne Tasting and Play Rooms.

Located only 3 hours’ drive from Paris, you will find the charming village of Saumur, France. And if you happen to spend your holidays in the middle of the Loire Valley with your kids, you must stop at The Veuve Amiot Cellar. Imagine tasting bubble wine, doing a “château” hop, and enjoying one of the most charming regions of France with stunning castles, while kids are welcomed and cared for. This is what we are talking about here…

What are things to do for kids during a trip in the Loire Valley, France?

Kids can enjoy the numerous outdoor activities, like beautiful gardens, the zooparc de Beauval, and tons of attractions and historic sites offering family-friendly activities. You must have heard of the famous castles like the château de Chambord or château du Clos Lucé, but GoWhee parents are finding little hidden gems in the region. How about a wine tasting cellar, with cave tours while your kids play safely? Yes, please!

Step into a unique cellar with a champagne tasting.

Madame Veuve Amiot started the Veuve Amiot Cellar in 1884. Everyone can visit the caves where you can learn more about the traditional practices of making champagne, with stories told by your guides, inside a network of stone caves.

While this immersive cultural experience is enough to bring a bit of “la magie” into your holidays in France, the cellar goes a step further and welcomes kids with open arms.

Why Parents Love the Veuve Amiot Cellar?

The tour is pretty cool; you can explore several kilometers of underground wine cellars, dug directly into the soft limestone of the Loire Valley.

This is a fully immersive and educational experience, presented by the staff, where you learn about the traditional méthode champenoise used to make sparkling wine. At the end, visitors get a tasting for adults, and kids can play in an enclosed, cute well appointed kids playroom.

Things to Know Before You Visit With Your Family

  • Tours are available in French and English and will last a little more than 1 hour.

  • Booking ahead is recommended, especially during school holidays

  • Family-friendly atmosphere, but not stroller-friendly. Come prepared with a child carrier

  • Cool underground temperature, so we recommend to bring a sweater and dress infants pretty warm.

  • Free parking is available on-site

  • Tours end with an optional tasting for adults.

Your " château" itinerary for a day in the loire valley with kids

After your visit, we recommend grabbing a picnic along the Loire River. The nearby Mushroom Museum, also in underground caves, is a quirky follow-up that kids will love.

Here are “chateaux” nearby that are a great addition to your trip:

  • The Château de Saumur,  is only a few kilometers from the cellar. It has some great exhibits, and kids 7–12 years old can enjoy the free “Château de Saumur Mystery!”. A booklet (available in English), which makes their visit fun and interactive.

  • The Château de Brézé has a full network of underground tunnels and the deepest dry moats in Europe. The whole family will be fascinated by the castle under the castle. But kids will particularly enjoy the cute little farm in the Chateau to keep them entertained.

  • The Château de Montsoreau is a modern art museum where you can take guided tours and educational workshops. For children 7+, check out the graffiti workshop. It is a lot of fun to learn about the history of graffiti and try it out, too.
