1. Card games

Whether your family loves a round of Uno or a round of Go Fish, card games are a great way to pass the time in a way the whole family will enjoy.

2. Tic-Tac-Toe

This is a classic game for all ages. Bring along a blank sheet of paper and some markers and have fun with it!

3. Coloring Competition

Coloring books are a go-to activity for kids (and adults) on long road trips. But why not make it interesting? Instead of just having your kids coloring different pictures, bring along copies of the same picture and have everyone vote on who colored it the best. This is a perfect way to engage with your child’s creativity and give them something to focus on while you travel. Best of all? Whoever wins gets a special treat!

4. Name That Famous Landmark

This works especially well if you’re driving cross-country. The game is easy: every time you pass a landmark, yell out, “Name that famous landmark!” and whoever answers right, wins the round. This will help your kids become educated on what they’re seeing as they pass by and prompt them to pay attention to their surroundings. (The best part about this game is that it can be ongoing for the entire trip!)

5. License Plate Game

How many state license plates can you find? This game is sure to keep all eyes focused on the road, searching the interstate or highway for license plates from all fifty states. (Tip: If you want to make the game last even longer, make everyone find all fifty states in alphabetical order or only give them the point if they can name the state’s capital.)

6. Don’t Laugh

This game is like a quiet game, but with a twist! Everyone (yes, even kids) knows that the quiet game is the adult way of getting peace and quiet, but this quiet game adds an edge to a classic car ride game. In this game, one person is designated as the talker and tries to get everyone else in the car to laugh by telling jokes, singing silly songs, or telling a story. Whoever laughs first loses!

7. Trivia

There are so many ways to do trivia games, but we always recommend what works best for your family. Whether you print off some fun facts about your destination, play a trivia game, or bring some flashcards to test your knowledge, there’s no wrong way to play. Plus, this competitive car game, it’s not only fun but also educational. Talk about a win-win!

8. Yellow car

This is a classic car game and one that your kids will remember for a long time. The game is simple: whoever spots a yellow car yells, “Yellow car!” Whoever counts ten yellow cars first wins the game. (Warning: This game can get intense quickly!)

9. Would You Rather

This game is great for finding out a lot about your kids’ personalities. This game is lots of fun and can get a little crazy with the questions everyone comes up with! Plus, you can always make it more fun by giving whoever can come up with the silliest “would you rather” question a special prize.

10. Story Time

This is a perfect way to keep the whole family entertained and focused on something other than the long trip. (We promise this will keep them from asking that dreaded, infamous question, “Are we there yet?” for at least thirty minutes.) The rules are simple: someone starts a story with one line and then each person contributes one line to the story. By the end of the story, you’re sure to be laughing at the silliness!

11. Finish The Lyrics

This game is easy and lots of fun, especially when the answer is right on the tip of your tongue. The rules are simple: one person starts singing a song and then stops mid-sentence. You can also play a song, press pause, and see who can finish the rest! Whoever guesses the rest of the lyrics correctly wins the round!

The best way to get through a long car ride with kids is to mix it up and keep it fun. You can even give the winner of each game a special prize like getting to pick where everyone has lunch, picking a treat at the next gas station stop, or getting to pick the first activity once you arrive at your destination!
