Find the most exciting things to do in St. Louis with kids, where parents can have fun too. From theme parks and cool animal encounters to cultural experiences and more…
Located only 3 hours’ drive from Paris, you will find the charming village of Saumur, France. And if you happen to spend your holidays in the middle of the Loire Valley with your kids, you must stop at The Veuve Amiot Cellar. Imagine tasting bubble wine, doing a “château” hop, and enjoying one of the most charming regions of France with stunning castles, while kids are welcomed and cared for. This is what we are talking about here…
Kids can enjoy the numerous outdoor activities, like beautiful gardens, the zooparc de Beauval, and tons of attractions and historic sites offering family-friendly activities. You must have heard of the famous castles like the château de Chambord or château du Clos Lucé, but GoWhee parents are finding little hidden gems in the region. How about a wine tasting cellar, with cave tours while your kids play safely? Yes, please!
Founded in 1884 by Madame Veuve Amiot, the Veuve Amiot Cellar and Caves isn’t just for wine lovers. It offers a unique chance to explore the underground world of sparkling wine, where tradition meets storytelling inside a network of stone caves.
While this immersive cultural experience is enough to bring a bit of “la magie” into your holidays in France, the cellar goes a step further and welcomes kids with open arms.
The tour is pretty cool; you can explore several kilometers of underground wine cellars, dug directly into the soft limestone of the Loire Valley.
This is a fully immersive and educational experience, presented by the staff, where you learn about the traditional méthode champenoise used to make sparkling wine. At the end, visitors get a tasting for adults, and kids can play in an enclosed, cute well appointed kids playroom.
Tours are available in French and English and will last a little more than 1 hour.
Booking ahead is recommended, especially during school holidays
Family-friendly atmosphere, but strollers may not be ideal inside the caves, so come prepared with a child carrier
Cool underground temperature, so we recommend to bring a sweater and dress infants pretty warm.
Free parking is available on-site
Tours end with an optional tasting for adults.
After your visit, we recommend grabbing a picnic along the Loire River. The nearby Mushroom Museum, also in underground caves, is a quirky follow-up that kids will love.
Here are “chateaux” nearby that are a great addition to your trip:
The Château de Saumur, only a few kilometers from the cellar, has some great exhibits. Children aged 7–12 can enjoy the free “Château de Saumur Mystery!” play booklet, available in English, which adds an interactive element to their visit.
Located just south of Saumur, the Château de Brézé is renowned for its extensive underground tunnels and the deepest dry moats in Europe. Children will be fascinated by the castle under the castle, the ancient bakery, and the stables. The château also has a cute little farm to keep younger kids entertained.
Only a few minutes’ drive to the east, you will find the Château de Montsoreau, which also acts as a modern art museum. Families can participate in guided tours and educational workshops, like the graffiti workshop for children aged 7 and up, where they can learn about the history of graffiti and be creative.
The visit costs 3.50 euros for adults, and it is free for anyone under 14 years old.
The cellar and visit are accessible according to their website, but it has not been verified by our community.
Although there are transportation options from Paris, it is recommended to rent a car for this activity.
The cellar welcomes kids of all ages.
There are indeed other places offering tastings and original experiences with a kid-friendly atmosphere, like the Veuve Amiot cellar. You will find them on the GoWhee App under the “drink” category.
Most families will come during the summer season. GoWhee parents recommend visiting during the easter holidays instead to enjoy the nice weather and avoid the crowd.
