Are you starting to feel as overwhelmed as we are with Zoom conferences, the news story du jour, and binge-worthy melodramas? Then you’re ready for some serious unplugged time.
Get away from it all for the weekend and spend quality time in nature with the kids.

Now, let’s look at our 7 best nature accommodation picks around the world where you can unplug with your kids.

Centre de l'Hêtre, Lac-Beauport, QC, Canada

You may also like

At Centre de l’Hêtre, you’ll be sleeping in one of their yurts or domes, nestled perfectly in the peaceful environment of Lac-Beauport, a nature suburb of Quebec City.

All yurts and domes are equipped with a wood stove, 20L of drinking water and an odorless compost toilet a few steps away. Don’t worry! You can always use the regular toilet and shower located at the main building if you wish.
The Centre also offers:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation sessions
  • Thai massage
  • Outdoor fire pits
  • Lake access on Lac Poulin
  • Tons of kid-friendly hiking trails (or snowshoeing in the winter)

We definitely recommend staying in the domes (if you are a family of 4 or less). A third of the dome is glazed, which allows you to admire the natural world that surrounds you and to gaze upon the stars at night.

Just a few miles outside the West Yellowstone National Park entrance is this amazing glamping experience. Under Canvas offers safari-style tents for you and your family to sleep outdoors under the stars, with:

  • Fire pits and s’mores
  • Complimentary Camp Activities
  • USB battery packs
  • Private bathroom

You’ll definitely have a magical glamping experience staying at Under Canvas!

Note: There are a few other Under Canvas locations across the U.S. Be sure to check their website to see all the locations.

Auberge Nordique, Le Grand Bornand, FRANCE

Auberge Nordique is an all-inclusive resort in the heart of the Aravis Mountains in the French Alps. And its setting in the middle of the Aravis Valley is just secluded enough from the town of Le Grand Bornand that your family will easily unplug and relax.

The inn offers different themed stays in the summer and in the winter:

  • Relaxation & Wellness
  • Hiking
  • Skiing
  • Art & Nature
  • And more…

They also have a Children’s Club for the kids to explore nature with new friends. No need to think about planning daily activities and meals, because it’s all planned out for you and included in the cost.

Overlooking Lake Cocibolca and the Madera volcano, Finca Montania Sagrada is located on Ometepe island, in the rural village of Merida. It’s an excellent choice to disconnect in nature.

Each villa is placed far enough apart, amidst flowers and fruit gardens, to maximize privacy. During your stay, you’ll share the property with various animals, such as horses, dogs, cats and parrots.

The owners also organize guided horseback riding tours around the volcano. You can also hike to the top of the volcano, walk up to San Ramón Waterfall or rent kayaks to explore the lake. Be warned, Merida is a rural town where electricity can go down.

In other words, you might literally unplug!

Nothing can beat a night under the stars in the desert to unplug in nature, and the desert of Erg Chebbi, near Mergouza in Morocco, is a great place for it. Called “the gates of the Sahara”, Erg Chebbi has sand dunes that can reach up to 150 meters.

There are a few Sahara Desert camps in Erg Chebbi where you can experience a camel ride in the sand dunes and stay overnight in the desert. Once there, your family will enjoy the silence and the sky full of stars.

Without getting your expectations too high, it’ll likely be the prettiest night sky you’ve ever seen!

While you can directly book a night in a desert camp, we 100% recommend booking through a private tour operation. Most Morrocco tour operators include the camel ride and overnight stay in Erg Chebbi in their itinerary.

Hostels with kids? Yes, it’s totally possible to stay in a hostel with your kids, and the Mosquito Wilderness Hostel is the perfect choice for families.

Located along the famous Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies, 20 kilometers south of Lake Louise, this hostel has a private cabin you can rent for a family of up to  6 people, and includes:

  • Propane heating, lighting and refrigeration
  • A fully-equipped kitchen
  • Purified water

By staying at the Mosquito Creek Hostel, you’ll get to drive along Icefields Parkway and explore Banff and Jasper National Parks.

And after a long day of outdoor exploration, what’s better than coming back to a wood-burning sauna? Just make sure you call dibs early, so your partner is prepared to watch the kids for 30 minutes. 😉

Note: There are a few other wilderness hostels along the Icefields Parkway that can be good options, too, such as the Athabasca Falls HI Wilderness Hostel near Jasper.

Cedar Glen Lodge, Lake Tahoe, California, USA

The first things that spring to mind when thinking of California are palm trees and beaches. But California has so much more to offer for nature lovers, especially in Northern California.

Cedar Glen Lodge, located on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, is a great family-friendly resort offering cozy cottages with fireplaces and easy access to this beautiful lake.

Onsite, you’ll find a seasonally-heated pool, a hot tub, a sauna, fire-pits and activities for the kids, including:

  • Ping Pong
  • Volleyball
  • Putting green

Lake Tahoe is definitely an oasis for families looking to unplug for a few days.
